Origins of Halloween
Thousands of years ago, at the end of October, the celts celebrated Samhain.
They believed that on this night all of those that had died during the year would come back in search of a living human
body to possess. They thought that by dressing up in frightening costumes, (often made of animal heads and furs),
they could scare the hungry spirits away or trick them into believing they were animals instead of people. Eventually,
the Catholic Religion made November 1st "All Saints Day" with the night before being called "All Hallows Eve" That's
how it became Halloween to us. Halloween came to North America in the 1800's with immigrating Europeans.
Trick or treating originates from the mid 19th century custom of "Souling".
Early Christians believed that good people went straight to heaven, bad ones to hell and if you were "so-so" then you went
to "purgatory"-the in between place. They believed you could get a loved one from purgatory to Heaven if you could get
enough prayers said for them. They families of the deceased would wander from house to house offering small cakes called
"soul cakes" to their neighbours. In exchange, the neighbours would say a prayer for he deceased. Eventually,
this became to more modern custom of trick-or-treating.
